Out of a total of 305 participating companies, with twelve finalists selected across four categories, Primaform AG has emerged as the winner in the category “External Toolmaking under 50 Employees.”
The jury particularly praised Primaform’s strategic investments in cutting-edge technologies such as laser texturing and wet milling of graphite electrodes. The company’s toolmaking operations also feature an excellent assembly concept based on flow production, with task-specific workstations, height-adjustable tables, and digital viewers at every station. With a high degree of automation and strong process expertise in milling and EDM, Primaform consistently achieves exceptional precision levels.
Based in Thun, Switzerland, Primaform AG employs 43 people and 9 apprentices. The company specializes in complex single-, multi-component, and hybrid injection molds, particularly for the medical technology and healthcare industries. Every year, between 50 and 60 molds—featuring up to 96 cavities, weighing up to five tons, and measuring up to one meter in size—leave the facility in Thun. In addition to classic toolmaking technologies, the highly automated machinery also includes specialized processes such as surface texturing and microscale laser structuring. Primaform also manufactures injection molds with electric drives and in-house developed control software. The company's services cover the entire value chain, from plastic-optimized part design and process development to full product and tool qualification.

The annual competition, organized by the Machine Tool Laboratory WZL of RWTH Aachen University and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT, has carried the motto “Learning from the Best” since 2003. Each year, over 300 tool and mold making companies take part to benchmark their performance and pursue continuous improvement.
